Why this section responds well to teaching
Reading and Writing feels like a test of general ability, which is why students assume it cannot be improved. It is not. The digital section presents one short passage per question, and those questions fall into a small number of recognisable types: main idea, function of a sentence, supporting evidence, inference, vocabulary in context, and a defined set of grammar and punctuation conventions.
Once a student can name the type in front of them, the approach becomes specific rather than intuitive. That shift is usually where a stalled score starts moving again, and it is why the first lessons concentrate on classification before speed.
What we work on
Question-type recognition
Naming the type before attempting the answer, because each type rewards a different move.
Grammar conventions
Punctuation, subject-verb agreement, modifiers and transitions, all of which recur and are learnable.
Evidence and inference
Choosing what the text supports rather than what is plausible or true in general.
Vocabulary in context
Where the top of the scale is decided, and where reading widely pays off more than word lists.
For students whose first language is not English
Many UAE students are highly fluent but were not schooled in the specific conventions this section tests, such as semicolon use or dangling modifiers. That is a narrow, teachable gap and is quite different from a reading comprehension problem. We identify which one is actually in play before deciding what to do.
