What the test involves
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting. Speaking is a face-to-face interview, which may be on a different day.

Reported in bands from 0 to 9, in half-band steps, per section and overall. Available on paper and computer-delivered, with an online option in some circumstances. Confirm the current format and availability with your test centre.
Where bands are actually won and lost
Most candidates arrive with Listening and Reading already close to their target and a Writing score a full band below it. That pattern is so common it is almost the default, and it has a straightforward cause: Listening and Reading reward comprehension, which years of schooling in English already build, while Writing rewards a specific rhetorical structure that nobody teaches by accident.
So the work concentrates there. Students write real tasks under time, and each one comes back marked against the four criteria the examiner uses — task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Seeing which of the four is holding the score back is usually the moment the plateau breaks.

Check which test your destination accepts
IELTS, TOEFL and PTE are not interchangeable. Universities, professional bodies and immigration routes each specify which they accept and what minimum they require, sometimes per section. Confirm that before choosing a test, not after preparing for one.
