Why strong maths students still lose marks here
SAT Math does not test advanced content. A student comfortable with IGCSE higher tier or IB Standard Level mathematics has met almost everything on it. What catches them is the format: short questions answered fast, where a single sign error or a misread "which of the following is NOT" costs the same as not knowing the topic.
So the first thing we do is separate the error types. A student losing eight marks across four content gaps and four careless slips needs two different interventions, and treating all eight as "revise algebra" fixes half the problem at best.
What the section covers
Algebra
Linear equations, systems and inequalities, which make up the largest share of questions.
Advanced maths
Quadratics, polynomials, exponentials and nonlinear systems.
Problem solving and data analysis
Ratios, percentages, units and interpretation of tables and graphs.
Geometry and trigonometry
A smaller share, including circles and right-triangle trigonometry.
Student-produced responses
The non-multiple-choice questions, where entry format itself causes avoidable losses.
Desmos
Using the built-in graphing calculator to solve algebraically awkward questions in seconds.
Desmos is a strategy, not a convenience
Because the graphing calculator is available on every question, several question types that look like algebra problems are faster solved graphically. Students who have not practised this solve them the long way and run out of time in the second module. It is taught explicitly rather than mentioned.
