The Digital SAT: What Changed and What It Means
The SAT is now digital and adaptive, taken in the Bluebook application. The format changes how the test should be prepared for, not just how it is delivered.

What "adaptive" actually means here
The SAT is adaptive by section, not by question. Each of the two sections has two modules: everyone gets the same kind of first module, and performance on it determines whether the second module is the harder or the easier version. Within a module you can move freely between questions, flag them and come back.
The practical consequence is that the first module carries disproportionate weight, because it decides which scoring range is still reachable. A student who loses focus in the first twenty questions has capped their score before the second module begins. This is the single biggest strategic difference from the old paper test, and it is why we practise the opening of each section deliberately.
What else the digital format changes
Shorter passages
Reading and Writing now uses one short passage per question rather than long passages with question sets, which rewards a different reading habit.
Calculator throughout
Desmos is built in and available on every Math question. There is no longer a no-calculator section.
Built-in tools
A timer, an annotation tool, an answer eliminator and a reference sheet. Students who have not used them lose time discovering them on test day.
Faster results
Scores return considerably sooner than under the paper format, which makes planning a second sitting easier.
Practise in Bluebook, not on paper
Paper practice trains the wrong pacing and cannot reproduce the adaptive structure at all. All full-length practice should be taken in the official Bluebook application so the conditions, the tools and the module transitions are the ones you will meet.
