What the current GRE looks like
The test was shortened substantially, and the Verbal and Quantitative sections are section-adaptive: performance on the first influences the second.

Vocabulary is necessary but not sufficient
GRE Verbal has a reputation as a vocabulary test, and word lists are where most candidates start. They are worth doing, but memorising several hundred words does less for a score than candidates expect, because the harder questions turn on sentence logic — what the structure of a sentence requires the missing word to do — rather than on recognition alone.
So lessons split the work. Vocabulary is set as independent study with a spaced-repetition method, because it needs frequency rather than lesson time. Lesson time goes to the reasoning: reading the sentence for its logical shape, eliminating on structure, and handling the reading comprehension passages where the answer is defensible from the text rather than merely plausible.
Which programmes still require the GRE
A number of graduate programmes have made the GRE optional or dropped it, and the picture varies by field and by year. Check each programme’s current requirement before committing months of preparation, and note that "optional" at a competitive programme often still means a strong score helps.
