How the SSAT is scored, and why percentiles confuse people
The SSAT reports scaled scores and, more importantly for admissions, percentiles comparing the student against others of the same age and gender who have taken the test in recent years. Because that comparison group is self-selected — families applying to selective schools — a percentile that looks modest can represent a strong performance against the general population.
This matters for how parents read a practice result. A 60th percentile is not a mediocre score in absolute terms; it is a mid-range result among an already-selective group. We explain where a student actually sits before setting a target, because targets set from a misreading tend to be either complacent or crushing.

The synonym and analogy questions reward sustained vocabulary building, which needs to start early rather than be crammed.

Unscored but sent to schools, and read. Structure and legibility both count.
A note on age and intensity
SSAT candidates are young, and the most common mistake is preparing them like sixteen-year-olds. Sessions are shorter, practice is spaced, and full-length tests are used sparingly. A child who has been drilled into resenting the test does not perform better on the day.
