IGCSE SOCIOLOGY

IGCSE Sociology Tutoring for Students in the UAE

Students choose Sociology for the topics and are examined on the methods. Research methods sits in Paper 1 alongside identity and inequality, it is compulsory, and it is where the grades separate.

  • The full assessment structure, read from the published syllabus
  • 12 syllabus areas mapped to your school’s scheme of work
  • Taught by a specialist in this subject, not a generalist
  • 90-minute online lessons, scheduled in UAE time

How Sociology is assessed, board by board

One awarding body's specification is set out below, with a link to the syllabus it was read from and the date it was checked. If your school uses a different board for Sociology, send us the specification code and we will confirm what changes.

  • Research methods is compulsory and sits in Paper 1 alongside identity and inequality — it is not an optional topic and it carries marks in every series. Pearson’s International GCSE range does not include Sociology.

Weightings are the awarding body’s own published figures. Where a board tiers the entry, the same weighting applies to both tiers — what changes is the grade range available.

What students usually need help with

Not a list of topics — a list of the specific things that cost marks in Sociology regardless of how well the content is known.

  • Methods as a scored topic

Strengths and limitations of each method, with a reason tied to the research context, appear in every series and are frequently under-revised.

  • Using perspectives precisely

Functionalist, Marxist and feminist readings are analytical tools, and marks come from applying one to the question rather than defining it.

  • Evidence over opinion

The higher bands want studies, statistics and named examples. Personal reflection, however thoughtful, sits in the lower bands.

  • Essay timing

Paper 1 is two hours for two questions and Paper 2 is an hour and three quarters. Running out of time on the 26-mark essay is the single most common way to lose a grade.

What the syllabus covers

The content both boards cover, grouped by area. Unit names and their order differ by specification — this shows the shape of the course; your own syllabus shows what is examinable.

  • Research methods

Quantitative and qualitative methods · Sampling techniques and sampling frames · Reliability, validity and representativeness · Ethical issues in sociological research

  • Identity and inequality

Culture, socialisation and identity · Social class, wealth and poverty · Gender, ethnicity and age as sources of inequality · Social control, conformity and deviance

  • Family, education and crime

Family forms, roles and changing family patterns · The functions of education and differential achievement · Crime, deviance and criminal statistics · Theoretical perspectives applied to each institution

Where marks are actually lost

Research methods is the reliable grade separator, and it is the topic students revise last because it feels like a preamble to the interesting material. It is not: it is compulsory content in Paper 1, it recurs in questions about other topics, and the marks are for reasoning about a specific study rather than reciting a list. A student who can say why a structured interview suits one research question and an unstructured one suits another is earning marks that a student with better topic knowledge is not.

The second loss is time on the extended question. Each paper ends with a 26-mark essay, and candidates who have written three shorter answers carefully arrive at it with twenty minutes. The essays are where the top bands live, so the practical fix is a rehearsed timing plan — minutes allocated per question before the exam, not judged during it — and practising the essay under exactly the time it will actually get.

Send the specification code

Two students can both be "doing IGCSE Sociology" and sit different papers, at different lengths, with a different grade ceiling. The specification code — 0610, 4BI1 and so on — is on the front of your syllabus and on every past paper, and it is the first thing we ask for. With it we can put you with a tutor who has taught that paper; without it, the subject match can be right and the exam preparation wrong.

  • IGCSE Tutoring

Subject tutoring for Year 10 and Year 11 students working towards IGCSE or GCSE. Lessons follow your school’s board and specification, with past papers from the start rather than at the end.

  • IGCSE Pricing

IGCSE tutoring is priced per subject. Starting in Year 10 rather than Year 11 is the single biggest thing a family can do to reduce what it spends.

  • How it works

Every student starts with a free consultation and ends with a plan that has a date on it. What happens in between depends on which exam you are sitting.

Tell us where Sociology is going wrong

Send a recent piece of marked work or a past paper with the marks on it, and tell us the specification code. That shows us more in five minutes than a description of the problem does in an hour.
