Why Year 11 costs more than Year 10
IGCSE subjects are two-year courses examined at the end, and the material taught in Year 10 is assumed throughout Year 11. A student who did not properly absorb the Year 10 chemistry is not behind by one topic in Year 11; they are behind in every topic that builds on it. Ten lessons in Year 10 addressing the actual gap frequently prevents a thirty-lesson recovery in Year 11.
There is also a threshold effect that families underestimate. The difference between a 6 and a 7 in a subject can decide sixth-form entry, and the difference between a 3 and a 4 in English or Maths can decide whether a subject has to be retaken at all. Because those thresholds are narrow, a small, well-targeted package close to a boundary is often better value than a large one spread across a whole syllabus.
Starting in Year 11 is still worth doing
