IGCSE Economics Tutoring for Students in the UAE
Two things are marked strictly in IGCSE Economics and both are learnable in a fortnight: definitions and diagrams. Students who fix those stop losing marks they were never going to get credit for by explaining well.
- 2 awarding bodies, each examined differently — both set out below
- 16 syllabus areas mapped to your school’s scheme of work
- Taught by a specialist in this subject, not a generalist
- 90-minute online lessons, scheduled in UAE time
How Economics is assessed, board by board
2 awarding bodies examine Economics and they do not do it the same way. Find yours below — each block names the syllabus it came from and the date it was checked. If you do not know which board your school entered you for, the specification code is on the front of the syllabus and on every past paper.

Pearson Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics (4EC1)
| Component | Weight | Length | What it asks for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Microeconomics and Business Economics | 50% | 1 hour 30 min · 80 marks | structured questions and data response — Four compulsory questions of 20 marks each |
| Paper 2: Macroeconomics and the Global Economy | 50% | 1 hour 30 min · 80 marks | structured questions and data response — Four compulsory questions of 20 marks each |
- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
- No multiple-choice paper here, where Cambridge gives 30% of the grade to one. Two evenly weighted structured papers instead, which rewards written precision earlier than the Cambridge route does.

Weightings are the awarding body’s own published figures. Where a board tiers the entry, the same weighting applies to both tiers — what changes is the grade range available.
What students usually need help with
Not a list of topics — a list of the specific things that cost marks in Economics regardless of how well the content is known.
Diagram accuracy
Axes labelled with price and quantity, curves labelled, the shift drawn in the right direction and the new equilibrium marked. Each of those is a mark and each is routinely dropped.
Definitions, word for word
Opportunity cost, inflation, elasticity: the mark scheme has wordings, and an approximate definition scores nothing even when the concept is clearly understood.
Evaluation at the top end
"Discuss whether" questions want both sides and a supported judgement. A one-sided answer, however detailed, is capped.
The multiple-choice paper on Cambridge
30% of the grade in one hour, and practising it is a different exercise from writing essays.
What the syllabus covers
The content both boards cover, grouped by area. Unit names and their order differ by specification — this shows the shape of the course; your own syllabus shows what is examinable.
The basic economic problem and allocation
Scarcity, choice and opportunity cost · Demand, supply and market equilibrium · Price elasticity of demand and supply · Market failure and government intervention
Microeconomic decision makers
Money, banking and the role of the central bank · Households: income, spending and saving · Workers, wage determination and trade unions · Firms, costs, revenue and economies of scale
Government and the macroeconomy
Macroeconomic aims and conflicts between them · Fiscal, monetary and supply-side policy · Inflation, unemployment and economic growth · Living standards and income distribution
International trade and globalisation
Specialisation, trade and the exchange rate · The balance of payments · Protectionism and free trade arguments · Globalisation and developing economies
Where marks are actually lost
Diagrams are the cheapest marks in the subject and the ones most often half-earned. A supply and demand diagram carries marks for labelled axes, labelled curves, a correctly directed shift and the new equilibrium — four marks available before any economics has been explained. Students draw them quickly, label two of the four, and then write a strong paragraph that cannot recover what the diagram gave away. Drilling diagrams until they are automatic is a fortnight of work and it shows up immediately.
The other pattern is one-sided evaluation. Higher-mark questions ask whether a policy works, and the band descriptors require both sides and a judgement with a reason. A student who writes four solid paragraphs in favour has written a good essay and answered a different question. On Cambridge the point is sharpened by the multiple-choice paper being 30% of the grade — a component that rewards precision of definition rather than quality of argument, and that essay-focused revision leaves untouched.
Send the specification code
Two students can both be "doing IGCSE Economics" and sit different papers, at different lengths, with a different grade ceiling. The specification code — 0610, 4BI1 and so on — is on the front of your syllabus and on every past paper, and it is the first thing we ask for. With it we can put you with a tutor who has taught that paper; without it, the subject match can be right and the exam preparation wrong.

Subject tutoring for Year 10 and Year 11 students working towards IGCSE or GCSE. Lessons follow your school’s board and specification, with past papers from the start rather than at the end.
IGCSE Pricing
IGCSE tutoring is priced per subject. Starting in Year 10 rather than Year 11 is the single biggest thing a family can do to reduce what it spends.
How it works
Every student starts with a free consultation and ends with a plan that has a date on it. What happens in between depends on which exam you are sitting.
Tell us where Economics is going wrong
Send a recent piece of marked work or a past paper with the marks on it, and tell us the specification code. That shows us more in five minutes than a description of the problem does in an hour.
