IGCSE Geography Tutoring for Students in the UAE
Two things decide an IGCSE Geography grade: whether case studies come with real figures, and which fieldwork route the school entered for. Everything else is comfortably learnable.
- 2 awarding bodies, each examined differently — both set out below
- 12 syllabus areas mapped to your school’s scheme of work
- Taught by a specialist in this subject, not a generalist
- 90-minute online lessons, scheduled in UAE time
How Geography is assessed, board by board
2 awarding bodies examine Geography and they do not do it the same way. Find yours below — each block names the syllabus it came from and the date it was checked. If you do not know which board your school entered you for, the specification code is on the front of the syllabus and on every past paper.
Cambridge International
Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460)
| Component | Weight | Length | What it asks for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Physical Geography | 36% | 1 hour 45 min · 75 marks | structured questions and data response — Topics 1–5 |
| Paper 2: Human Geography | 36% | 1 hour 45 min · 75 marks | structured questions and data response |
| Component 3: Coursework | 28% | Marked in school, moderated by the board | coursework and independent investigation — A fieldwork investigation; an alternative to Paper 4 |
| Paper 4: Geographical Investigations | 28% | 1 hour 30 min · 60 marks | data response and independent investigation — A written paper about fieldwork, for schools that do not enter for coursework |
- Whether your school enters for coursework or for Paper 4 changes 28% of the grade and most of the year’s workload. Paper 4 still assumes real fieldwork has been done: it asks students to interpret data collection they are expected to recognise.

Pearson Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Geography (4GE1)
| Component | Weight | Length | What it asks for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Physical Geography | 40% | 1 hour 10 min · 70 marks | structured questions and data response |
| Paper 2: Human Geography | 60% | 1 hour 45 min · 105 marks | structured questions, data response and essay |
- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
- The two papers are not equal: human geography carries 60% and runs to an hour and three quarters, while physical geography is 70 minutes. A revision plan that splits time evenly between them is already wrong.

Weightings are the awarding body’s own published figures. Where a board tiers the entry, the same weighting applies to both tiers — what changes is the grade range available.
What students usually need help with
Not a list of topics — a list of the specific things that cost marks in Geography regardless of how well the content is known.
Case studies with numbers
A named place, a date and a figure earn marks that "a developing country" never will. Most of the difference between a 6 and an 8 is this.
Map and graph skills
Grid references, cross-sections and proportional symbols carry reliable marks and are usually the least-revised part of the specification.
The fieldwork route
Coursework or the written investigations paper — 28% of the Cambridge grade depends on which one your school entered for, and they are prepared for differently.
Command words
"Describe" wants the pattern, "explain" wants the process, "evaluate" wants a judgement. Answering the wrong one is the most common avoidable loss.
What the syllabus covers
The content both boards cover, grouped by area. Unit names and their order differ by specification — this shows the shape of the course; your own syllabus shows what is examinable.
Physical geography
Plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes · Rivers: processes, landforms and flooding · Coasts: erosion, deposition and management · Weather, climate and natural vegetation
Human geography
Population dynamics, migration and settlement · Urbanisation, urban problems and planning · Agriculture, industry and tourism · Energy, water and the environmental risks of economic development
Geographical skills and fieldwork
Map skills: grid references, scale, cross-sections and relief · Graph and data interpretation, including photographs · Fieldwork methods: sampling, data collection and presentation · Evaluating the reliability of collected data
Where marks are actually lost
Case-study marks are the clearest example on this site of effort in the wrong place. Students revise topics and then write about "an LEDC" in the exam, when the mark scheme wants a named location, a date, a figure and a consequence. Five well-built case studies — one per topic, each with three facts a student can actually recall — outperform a full set of notes every time, and they are quick to build once someone shows what a usable one looks like.
The fieldwork route is the other thing to settle early. On Cambridge, 28% of the grade goes to either a coursework investigation or Paper 4, and they demand different work: coursework is a supervised write-up across months, Paper 4 is an exam about fieldwork technique that still assumes real data collection has happened. A student preparing for the wrong one has misallocated more than a quarter of the qualification, and the answer is one question to the school.
Send the specification code
Two students can both be "doing IGCSE Geography" and sit different papers, at different lengths, with a different grade ceiling. The specification code — 0610, 4BI1 and so on — is on the front of your syllabus and on every past paper, and it is the first thing we ask for. With it we can put you with a tutor who has taught that paper; without it, the subject match can be right and the exam preparation wrong.

IGCSE Tutoring
Subject tutoring for Year 10 and Year 11 students working towards IGCSE or GCSE. Lessons follow your school’s board and specification, with past papers from the start rather than at the end.
IGCSE Pricing
IGCSE tutoring is priced per subject. Starting in Year 10 rather than Year 11 is the single biggest thing a family can do to reduce what it spends.
How it works
Every student starts with a free consultation and ends with a plan that has a date on it. What happens in between depends on which exam you are sitting.
Tell us where Geography is going wrong
Send a recent piece of marked work or a past paper with the marks on it, and tell us the specification code. That shows us more in five minutes than a description of the problem does in an hour.
