AB, BC, and which to take
Calculus AB covers limits, derivatives, integrals and the fundamental theorem. BC includes all of that and adds series, parametric and polar functions, and additional integration techniques. BC is not a harder version of AB so much as AB plus a further body of content at a faster pace.
Students who are confident and well ahead in mathematics generally take BC; those who want a secure 5 rather than a stretched 3 often do better with AB. A BC score also reports an AB subscore, which is worth knowing when weighing the risk.
Where marks are lost
Justification
A correct answer without the required reasoning loses points. The rubric asks for specific language and students rarely supply it unprompted.
Units and notation
Omitted units and incorrect notation cost marks that have nothing to do with the calculus.
Calculator sections
Knowing when to use the calculator and how to present a calculator-derived result acceptably.
BC series
Convergence tests, which are the topic BC students most often find unstable under exam pressure.
Write answers the way they are marked
More AP Calculus points are lost to presentation than to mathematics. Students who write out a justification in the expected form, state units and show the setup consistently score above students who do the harder maths and present it loosely.
