AA and AI are not interchangeable
Analysis and Approaches is the more abstract of the two, with heavier algebra, calculus and proof. Applications and Interpretation is more statistical and modelling-led, with technology used throughout. A tutor who treats them as the same course with different names will teach the wrong emphasis, and at Higher Level the divergence is substantial.
This also matters for university applications. Some courses, particularly engineering, economics and mathematics itself, specify Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. If a student is in the wrong course for their intended degree, that is worth discovering in the first Diploma year rather than in the final one.
