Which course is which
Physics 1 and 2 are algebra-based and do not require calculus. Physics C, in its mechanics and electricity and magnetism forms, is calculus-based and is usually taken alongside or after Calculus. Students aiming at engineering or physics degrees typically take Physics C; Physics 1 is more often the first exposure.
The courses differ in mathematics but share the feature that catches students out: the exams ask you to justify, not just to calculate. A numerically correct answer with no reasoning frequently earns a fraction of the available points.

Designing a procedure that would actually answer the question, including what to measure and how to reduce error.
Paragraph-length responses
A coherent physical argument, which is marked on reasoning rather than on conclusion alone.
Graphical analysis
Linearising data and stating what a gradient physically represents.
Multi-representation questions
Moving between equations, graphs, diagrams and words for the same situation.
Justification is the whole game
Students trained on school tests that reward the right number find AP Physics frustrating at first. Once they see that the rubric awards the reasoning steps, and practise writing those explicitly, scores usually move quickly without any new physics being learned.
