Where marks are actually lost
The extended-response questions are where grades separate, and they are not asking for calculation. They ask you to explain a mechanism in the right order, using the right vocabulary, and they award marks for each correct link in the chain. A student who writes a paragraph that is true but unordered gets perhaps a third of the available marks, which is why practising these against a real mark scheme moves a grade faster than another set of numerical questions.
The second loss is the practical endorsement and the practical-skills questions that sit on the written papers. They are examined as knowledge of method — uncertainty, resolution, why a particular apparatus was chosen — and most students meet them only in the lab, where nobody is marking the reasoning. Going through past practical questions explicitly, away from the equipment, is unglamorous and reliably worth marks.
Tell us the board first
Physics is offered by AQA, OCR A, Edexcel, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
