Where marks are actually lost
Organic chemistry is memorised by most students and understood by few, which works until the paper asks for a mechanism it has not shown them. Arrow-pushing is a grammar: once a student can say why the electrons move rather than where they moved last time, unfamiliar mechanisms stop being unfamiliar. Until then, every new reaction is a new fact to store, and the storage runs out somewhere in the second year.
Physical chemistry loses marks differently — to arithmetic under pressure, to units, and to not stating the assumption a calculation rests on. These are recoverable in a way the organic gap is not, and they are usually the fastest marks available to a student a grade below target. Which of the three areas is actually costing you is visible in ten minutes of marked work, and it decides where the lessons go.
Tell us the board first
Chemistry is offered by AQA, OCR A, Edexcel, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
