How it is examined

Where marks are actually lost
The difficulty is volume and simultaneity. Two full A Levels in mathematics are being examined in the same session, the Further content assumes the standard content is already secure, and school timetables frequently run them in parallel rather than in sequence. A student who is a fortnight behind in Mathematics is a month behind in Further Mathematics, because the second is built on the first.
Content-wise, complex numbers and matrices are where the losses concentrate, for the same reason: both are genuinely new objects rather than extensions of something familiar, and both are examined with the expectation that you manipulate them fluently rather than derive them slowly. Fluency comes from volume, so lessons here are weighted towards worked practice under time rather than towards explanation.

Further Mathematics is offered by Edexcel, AQA, OCR, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
