Where marks are actually lost
Command words are the whole game. "Describe" and "explain" are marked differently, "suggest" invites an answer the specification never taught, and a student who writes everything they know about a topic in response to a four-mark question routinely scores two. The fix is mechanical and fast: answer the command word, in the number of points the marks imply, and stop. Most students gain a grade from this alone before touching the content.
The second is the synoptic requirement. Questions deliberately link topics taught eighteen months apart — respiration against exercise physiology, genetics against ecology — and revision that works through the specification in order never builds those links. We revise across the syllabus rather than down it, which is uncomfortable for a week and then stops being the thing that loses marks.
Tell us the board first
Biology is offered by AQA, OCR A, Edexcel, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
