Where marks are actually lost
At IGCSE a correct final answer is worth nearly all the marks. At A Level it is worth one of them. The mark scheme pays for the method, the justification and the notation, so a student who can get the right number in their head and writes down three lines loses most of a question they understood completely. This is the single most common reason a strong IGCSE mathematician gets a C in their first A Level test.
The other recurring loss is modelling. Mechanics and statistics questions arrive as paragraphs of situation, and marks are given for stating assumptions, defining variables and saying what the model ignores — none of which is mathematics a student finds hard, and all of which is habit they have never been asked to build. We teach the write-up as explicitly as the content, because that is where the gap between understanding and grade sits.
Tell us the board first
Mathematics is offered by Edexcel, AQA, OCR, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
