Where marks are actually lost
The examiners want linguistic method applied to literary texts and literary sensitivity applied to non-literary ones. A student who writes a pure literature essay on a novel extract loses the framework marks; one who labels word classes in a poem without saying what the pattern does loses the interpretation marks. Knowing which mode a question is in, before writing, is most of the skill.
The non-fiction and spoken texts are the other place marks go. Travel writing, transcripts, journalism and digital text are analysed with the same seriousness as the set novel, and they are the material students revise least because there is no plot to remember. Working through unseen non-fiction under time is the practice that closes that gap.
Tell us the board first
English Language and Literature is offered by AQA, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
