Where marks are actually lost
The subject analyses language as data, using named frameworks — lexis, semantics, grammar, phonology, pragmatics, discourse. Marks are given for applying a framework accurately to a text, with terminology used precisely. A student writing perceptively about a transcript without the metalanguage reads well and scores in the middle, because the assessment objective being missed is the one about method rather than the one about insight.
The investigation is where independent students gain the most. It is genuinely open, it rewards a narrow question with real data behind it, and it punishes a broad one — "language and gender" is not a question, while "address terms in one workplace’s emails over six months" is. Choosing well takes an hour and saves a term.
Tell us the board first
English Language is offered by AQA, OCR, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
