Where marks are actually lost
The examined content is computer architecture, data representation, networks, databases, algorithms and the theory of computation, written by hand under timed conditions. Being able to build something that works is almost orthogonal to being able to trace a binary search on paper, explain why a hash table degrades, or convert between number bases quickly. The fix is to treat the theory as its own subject with its own revision, rather than as background to the coding.
The project is where able students lose marks they never see coming. It is assessed on the documented process — analysis, decomposition, iterative testing against stated success criteria, evaluation — and not on how impressive the finished program is. A sophisticated project with thin documentation scores below a modest one that is properly evidenced, every year.
Tell us the board first
Computer Science is offered by AQA, OCR, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
