Where marks are actually lost
Identification questions look like recall and are not. A specimen or a photomicrograph has to be read for the features that discriminate between candidates — texture, grain size, crystal habit — and then those features have to be written down as the reason for the identification. Students who name the rock correctly and give no reasoning routinely score a fraction of the available marks.
Geological maps are the other concentration. Reading dip and strike from outcrop patterns, sequencing events from cross-cutting relationships and drawing a coherent cross-section are learnable procedures rather than intuitions, and they appear on every paper. Practising them with a real map in front of you, repeatedly, is the single highest-yield revision in the subject.
Tell us the board first
Geology is offered by OCR, WJEC, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
