Where marks are actually lost
The sources are fragmentary, written centuries after the events, by authors with obvious purposes, and often surviving only because somebody later quoted them. Students who treat Herodotus or Tacitus as a textbook write confident answers that the mark scheme cannot reward. Students who treat every source as worthless write hedged ones it cannot reward either. The marks sit in the middle — using a flawed source for what it can actually support.
The second difficulty is unfamiliarity: there is no general knowledge to fall back on, so a gap in the reading is a blank rather than a guess. That makes coverage matter more here than in modern history, and it makes the specification checklist a genuinely useful revision tool rather than an administrative one.
Tell us the board first
Ancient History is offered by OCR, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
