Where marks are actually lost
A paragraph that explains what functionalists think and then stops has earned knowledge marks and nothing above them. The bands want the perspective turned on the question — what it predicts here, what a Marxist or feminist reading would predict instead, and which the evidence supports. That is a structural move students can be taught in a lesson and then practise, and it typically moves a grade faster than more content.
Methods in context is the component that catches people out. It asks you to apply a research method to a specific educational setting and to discuss the practical and ethical problems of that setting, not of the method in general. Answers written from a memorised list of method strengths score in the lowest band available, however accurate the list is.
Tell us the board first
Sociology is offered by AQA, OCR, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
