How it is examined

Where marks are actually lost
Melodic and harmonic dictation cannot be crammed. They improve through short, frequent practice over months — ten minutes daily beats two hours weekly — and students who leave them until the spring have run out of the one resource that section needs. Starting dictation in the first term is the single most consequential decision in the course.
Part-writing is the other half and is the opposite: a rule-governed system where errors are specific and correctable. Parallel fifths, voice crossing, unresolved sevenths and doubling errors each cost points, and a student who learns to check their own work against a short list eliminates most of them. Sight-singing, meanwhile, is recorded and assessed, and it makes many students uncomfortable enough that they under-rehearse it.
The date is not yours to move
AP exams sit in a fixed May window set by the College Board, so preparation has a hard deadline a private schedule cannot shift. If your school does not teach this course, you are buying a full year of teaching rather than top-up lessons, and starting in February is a materially different proposition from starting in September.
