Where marks are actually lost
The essay marks go to argument. A narrative that runs through the events in order, however accurate, sits in the lower bands; a piece that takes a position in the first paragraph and then makes each paragraph earn it does not. The content is the evidence, not the answer, and the reorganisation that follows from understanding that is usually worth more than another month of reading.
Source questions lose marks in a predictable place too: provenance treated as a formula. "This source is biased because the author was a politician" earns nothing. What earns marks is saying what that provenance does to the source’s usefulness for the specific question asked — which is a judgement, and one that can be practised against past mark schemes until it becomes automatic.
Tell us the board first
History is offered by AQA, OCR, Edexcel, CIE, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
