Where marks are actually lost
The specification asks for contemporary examples, and a paper answered entirely from events a decade old reads as a student who stopped paying attention. Keeping a small, organised file of recent examples — one or two per topic, with dates and outcomes — is a habit worth more than an extra revision guide, and it is the thing students most reliably fail to do.
The ideologies component is different in kind and is often under-prepared because it feels abstract. It is examined on precise doctrinal distinctions — what separates classical from modern liberalism, which strand of conservatism a thinker belongs to — and vague gestures at "believing in freedom" score nothing. It rewards exactly the kind of careful, small-scale learning the rest of the subject does not.
Tell us the board first
Politics is offered by AQA, Edexcel, and they do not examine it the same way — different options, different papers, different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the subject without the board may be teaching the wrong specification, so it is the first thing we ask.
