IGCSE MATHEMATICS

IGCSE Mathematics Tutoring for Students in the UAE

Three different qualifications go by the name "IGCSE Maths" in UAE schools, and they do not examine the same thing — one of them requires a graphic display calculator and an investigation paper. The first question is always which one you are entered for.

  • 3 awarding bodies, each examined differently — both set out below
  • 17 syllabus areas mapped to your school’s scheme of work
  • Taught by a specialist in this subject, not a generalist
  • 90-minute online lessons, scheduled in UAE time

How Mathematics is assessed, board by board

3 awarding bodies examine Mathematics and they do not do it the same way. Find yours below — each block names the syllabus it came from and the date it was checked. If you do not know which board your school entered you for, the specification code is on the front of the syllabus and on every past paper.

Cambridge International

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

ComponentWeightLengthWhat it asks for
Paper 1 (Core): Non-calculator50%1 hour 30 min · 80 marksstructured questions — No calculator allowed
Paper 3 (Core): Calculator50%1 hour 30 min · 80 marksstructured questions — Scientific calculator required
Paper 2 (Extended): Non-calculator50%2 hours · 100 marksstructured questions and problem solving — No calculator allowed
Paper 4 (Extended): Calculator50%2 hours · 100 marksstructured questions and problem solving — Scientific calculator required
  • Cambridge tiers this subject. Core candidates sit the Core papers and can be awarded grades C to G; Extended candidates sit the Extended papers and can be awarded A* to G. A student entered for Core cannot be given a grade above a C whatever they write, so if a sixth form is asking for a B in Mathematics, the entry tier is the first thing to check — and schools will usually still move a student between tiers if the work supports it.
  • Half of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is now sat without a calculator. Students who have done every piece of practice with one in their hand are preparing for the other half only, and arithmetic fluency has become a marks issue rather than a matter of style.

Cambridge International

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics (0607)

ComponentWeightLengthWhat it asks for
Paper 1 (Core): Non-calculator40%1 hour 15 min · 60 marksstructured questions
Paper 3 (Core): Calculator40%1 hour 15 min · 60 marksstructured questions — Graphic display calculator required
Paper 5 (Core): Investigation20%1 hour 15 min · 40 marksindependent investigation and problem solving
Paper 2 (Extended): Non-calculator40%1 hour 30 min · 75 marksstructured questions
Paper 4 (Extended): Calculator40%1 hour 30 min · 75 marksstructured questions — Graphic display calculator required
Paper 6 (Extended): Investigation and Modelling20%1 hour 30 min · 50 marksindependent investigation and problem solving
  • This is a different qualification from 0580, not a variant of it: it requires a graphic display calculator and it examines an investigation paper worth 20%. Schools choose 0607 when they intend students to continue to IB, and a tutor prepared for 0580 is not prepared for the investigation paper.

Pearson Edexcel

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1)

ComponentWeightLengthWhat it asks for
Paper 1 (Foundation 4MA1/1F or Higher 4MA1/1H)50%2 hours · 100 marksstructured questions and problem solving
Paper 2 (Foundation 4MA1/2F or Higher 4MA1/2H)50%2 hours · 100 marksstructured questions and problem solving
  • Pearson tiers by Foundation and Higher rather than Core and Extended, and a calculator is allowed in both papers. The tier still sets a ceiling, so the entry decision matters as much as it does on Cambridge — but the non-calculator problem does not arise here.

Weightings are the awarding body’s own published figures. Where a board tiers the entry, the same weighting applies to both tiers — what changes is the grade range available.

What students usually need help with

Not a list of topics — a list of the specific things that cost marks in Mathematics regardless of how well the content is known.

  • Non-calculator arithmetic

Cambridge 0580 now sets half the marks without a calculator. Students who have practised entirely with one are prepared for one of the two papers.

  • Method marks

Multi-step questions award marks for working. An answer with no working scores nothing when it is wrong, and often less than full when it is right.

  • Circle theorems and reasons

The mark is for naming the theorem, not only for the angle. "Angles in the same segment are equal" is the answer; 42° alone is half of it.

  • Tier of entry

Core on Cambridge is capped at C; Foundation on Pearson has its own ceiling. Both are decided by the school and both can usually be changed in time.

What the syllabus covers

The content both boards cover, grouped by area. Unit names and their order differ by specification — this shows the shape of the course; your own syllabus shows what is examinable.

  • Number

Types of number, sets and Venn diagrams · Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio · Standard form, bounds and limits of accuracy · Indices, surds and financial arithmetic

  • Algebra and graphs

Manipulating expressions, factorising and rearranging formulae · Linear, simultaneous and quadratic equations · Inequalities and sequences · Functions, graphs and their transformations · Differentiation, on the Extended and Higher tiers

  • Geometry, mensuration and trigonometry

Angles, polygons and circle theorems · Area, surface area and volume · Pythagoras and trigonometry, including the sine and cosine rules · Vectors and transformations

  • Statistics and probability

Averages, spread and cumulative frequency · Histograms with unequal class widths · Probability, tree diagrams and conditional probability · Scatter diagrams and correlation

Where marks are actually lost

The change worth planning around is Cambridge’s non-calculator paper, which carries 50% of 0580. It is not a harder syllabus — it is the same syllabus without the device that has been absorbing arithmetic slips for four years. Students who were comfortably on a 6 in school tests often drop two grades on a past paper the first time they sit one without a calculator, and recover most of it within a few weeks of deliberate practice. Finding that out in October is very different from finding it out in April.

The other consistent loss is working. Examiners award method marks generously and cannot award them for what is not on the page, so a student who does three steps mentally and writes one number is betting the whole question on the arithmetic being right. On a Higher or Extended paper, where questions routinely carry four or five marks, that habit is worth a grade on its own — and it is the easiest habit on this list to change.

Send the specification code

Two students can both be "doing IGCSE Mathematics" and sit different papers, at different lengths, with a different grade ceiling. The specification code — 0610, 4BI1 and so on — is on the front of your syllabus and on every past paper, and it is the first thing we ask for. With it we can put you with a tutor who has taught that paper; without it, the subject match can be right and the exam preparation wrong.

Other preparation tracks students often combine with this one.

  • IGCSE Tutoring

Subject tutoring for Year 10 and Year 11 students working towards IGCSE or GCSE. Lessons follow your school’s board and specification, with past papers from the start rather than at the end.

  • IGCSE Pricing

IGCSE tutoring is priced per subject. Starting in Year 10 rather than Year 11 is the single biggest thing a family can do to reduce what it spends.

  • How it works

Every student starts with a free consultation and ends with a plan that has a date on it. What happens in between depends on which exam you are sitting.

Tell us where Mathematics is going wrong

Send a recent piece of marked work or a past paper with the marks on it, and tell us the specification code. That shows us more in five minutes than a description of the problem does in an hour.
