Where marks are actually lost
Systems thinking is the examined skill, not environmental knowledge. Drawing a systems diagram with correct inputs, outputs, stores and flows, and then reasoning about feedback, is what the questions actually ask for. Students who answer from general environmental awareness write plausible paragraphs that collect very few marks.
Environmental value systems are the other distinctive demand. Questions ask how a technocentrist and an ecocentrist would respond differently to the same problem, and the marks are for the contrast, held consistently. It is a way of thinking that has to be practised deliberately, because nothing else in the Diploma asks for it.
The internal assessment
The IA is marked by your teacher against published criteria and moderated by the IB. We supervise it — we do not write it, because Environmental Systems and Societies coursework a student cannot defend is worth less than a weaker piece they can.
