What the exam is really asking for
AP Chemistry has shifted steadily away from recall and towards explanation. A typical free-response question gives data and asks why a system behaves as it does, and the marks are attached to reasoning at the particle level: what the molecules are doing and why that produces the observation.
Students who learned chemistry as a set of procedures find this difficult, because the procedures still produce correct numbers but earn only part of the credit. Rebuilding the habit of explaining mechanism alongside calculating is the central work.

Thermodynamics
Enthalpy, entropy and free energy, and reasoning about spontaneity.
Kinetics
Rate laws and mechanisms, where experimental data must be interpreted rather than recalled.

The explanatory backbone of much of the rest of the course.
Laboratory questions
A meaningful share of the free-response section concerns experimental work: procedure design, sources of error and data interpretation. Students who only revise theory are surprised by these, and they are among the most reliably improvable questions on the paper.
