Where marks are actually lost
The course is organised around themes — state building, religion, economic change, intellectual movements, social structures — and questions ask you to trace one of them. Students who revise by century produce chronological answers to thematic questions and lose the analytical marks. Reorganising notes by thread rather than by period is a single afternoon that changes how the whole exam reads.
The DBQ rubric is the same machinery as the other AP histories, which means the technique is portable: thesis, context, documents used as evidence, outside evidence, sourcing, complexity. A student taking two AP histories should practise the rubric once and apply it twice rather than learning it separately for each.
The date is not yours to move
AP exams sit in a fixed May window set by the College Board, so preparation has a hard deadline a private schedule cannot shift. If your school does not teach this course, you are buying a full year of teaching rather than top-up lessons, and starting in February is a materially different proposition from starting in September.
