How it is examined

Where marks are actually lost
Two of the three essays are on unseen passages, so there is no revision that substitutes for practice: reading a poem cold, finding something arguable in it, and writing a defensible thesis inside forty minutes is a trained reflex. Students who spend their preparation rereading set texts and never time themselves on unseen material arrive under-rehearsed for two thirds of the paper.
The third essay is answered from memory on a work you choose, and choosing badly is a common self-inflicted loss. A novel you know intimately and can quote in substance beats a more impressive one you half remember, every time. Deciding on two or three such works early, and knowing them properly, is worth more than broad reading.
The date is not yours to move
AP exams sit in a fixed May window set by the College Board, so preparation has a hard deadline a private schedule cannot shift. If your school does not teach this course, you are buying a full year of teaching rather than top-up lessons, and starting in February is a materially different proposition from starting in September.
