- Open text: clean copies of the set texts go into the exam room. That does not make quotation less important — it makes selecting the right quotation quickly the skill being tested, and students who have not practised with the book in front of them lose time hunting.

- Pearson does not tier this subject: every candidate sits the same papers and every grade is reachable from them. That removes the entry-tier decision entirely, which is one of the practical differences between the two boards.
- Closed text, unlike Cambridge: nothing goes into the exam room. Quotation has to be memorised, and a student moving between the two boards mid-course is changing not just the texts but the memory load.

Weightings are the awarding body’s own published figures. Where a board tiers the entry, the same weighting applies to both tiers — what changes is the grade range available.
What students usually need help with
Not a list of topics — a list of the specific things that cost marks in English Literature regardless of how well the content is known.
Quotation strategy
On closed-text papers this means memorising short, flexible quotations. On open text it means knowing where things are and choosing quickly, which needs a different kind of practice.
Writing about method
The marks are for how the writer creates the effect, not for what happens in the story. Retelling the plot is the single most common way able students score in the middle bands.
Essay shape under time
Three developed points beat six undeveloped ones, and most students need to be shown that rather than told it.
Unseen material
Where the paper sets an unseen poem or extract, technique is all there is — there is nothing to revise except the approach itself.
What the syllabus covers
The content both boards cover, grouped by area. Unit names and their order differ by specification — this shows the shape of the course; your own syllabus shows what is examinable.
Poetry

Drama

Where marks are actually lost
The band descriptors reward analysis of method, and the most common answer describes content instead. A student writes that the character is lonely and quotes a line proving it; the mark is for what the writer does to make the reader feel that loneliness — the caesura, the repetition, the withheld name. Once a student can hear the difference between "this shows he is lonely" and "the broken line makes the reader hesitate where he hesitates", the grade moves, and it usually moves within a term.
The open-text and closed-text difference then decides what revision looks like. Cambridge students should practise with the book in the room, because the skill being tested is fast, accurate selection under time — and students who have never done it lose minutes flicking. Pearson students need a memorised bank of short quotations, chosen for flexibility rather than for beauty, because a long quotation half-remembered is worth less than a six-word one recalled exactly.

Two students can both be "doing IGCSE English Literature" and sit different papers, at different lengths, with a different grade ceiling. The specification code — 0610, 4BI1 and so on — is on the front of your syllabus and on every past paper, and it is the first thing we ask for.
