Where marks are actually lost
The core theme asks what it is to be human, and the temptation is to answer it with opinions. The criteria want a thesis, arguments for it, the strongest objection stated fairly, and a response — in that order, with the philosophers used as resources rather than as authorities. A student who can do that shape can write a good essay on a topic they have barely revised.
The internal assessment starts from a non-philosophical stimulus — an image, a song, an advertisement — and students routinely spend half of it describing the stimulus. The marks are for the philosophical issue it raises and the argument developed from there. Getting past the stimulus in two sentences is most of what makes the difference.

The IA is marked by your teacher against published criteria and moderated by the IB. We supervise it — we do not write it, because Philosophy coursework a student cannot defend is worth less than a weaker piece they can.
