Where marks are actually lost
Power, sovereignty, legitimacy, interdependence, human rights — the marks come from using these to explain a specific case, not from defining them. An answer that explains what sovereignty means and then describes an event separately has done two things neither of which is the question. The move to practise is: concept, case, what the case does to the concept.
The engagement activity is examined as reflection on the gap between the theory and what you actually observed. Students choose something too large to engage with meaningfully, then write about the topic instead of about the engagement, and lose most of the criteria. A small, local, genuinely accessible activity produces a much better piece than an ambitious one done at a distance.
The internal assessment
The IA is marked by your teacher against published criteria and moderated by the IB. We supervise it — we do not write it, because Global Politics coursework a student cannot defend is worth less than a weaker piece they can.
