Where marks are actually lost
The writing task is marked substantially on text type and register. A student asked for a blog post who writes an essay has lost the conventions marks before the content is read — and those marks are not recoverable by writing well. Learning the handful of text types cold, with their conventions, is a short piece of work with a large payoff.
At HL two literary works are studied and can appear in the assessment, which regularly surprises students who chose B expecting no literature. And in the Individual Oral, marks come from developing a response around the stimulus image and the course themes rather than describing what the image shows — the same trap as the Philosophy IA, for the same reason.
The internal assessment
The IA is marked by your teacher against published criteria and moderated by the IB. We supervise it — we do not write it, because English B coursework a student cannot defend is worth less than a weaker piece they can.
