The short answer

Create a UCAT account when registration opens, get any access arrangements approved, then book a date and a Pearson VUE test centre once booking opens. As of October 2026 the 2026 cycle is closed; UCAT will publish 2027 instructions in March 2027.

To sit the UCAT, you create a UCAT account once registration opens, get any access arrangements approved, then book a date and a Pearson VUE test centre once booking opens, and sit the test inside the summer testing window. As of October 2026 the 2026 cycle is closed: the booking deadline was 16 September 2026, and UCAT says instructions for registering and booking the UCAT 2027 will be published in March 2027.

Until those instructions appear, the 2026 cycle is the clearest guide to how the process runs. The steps below follow it in order, with every date taken from UCAT's official test dates page. Read the dates as a record of 2026, not a forecast for 2027.

UCAT states its deadlines in UK time. During British Summer Time the UAE is three hours ahead, so the 15:00 booking deadline in September fell at 18:00 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. UCAT also says it makes no exceptions to its deadlines.

Step 1: Check that you need the UCAT, and which version

The UCAT is an entry requirement for relevant medicine and dentistry courses at the UCAT Consortium's UK universities and at its partner universities. Requirements differ from course to course, so check every course on your list with the university itself before you register.

  • One sitting per test year. You may sit the UCAT once in a test cycle, and a second sitting in the same year is treated as misconduct. UCAT also asks candidates not to sit it early as a "practice run".
  • The right year. The UCAT 2026 served applicants for 2027 entry, or deferred entry in 2028, and its results are valid only for that admissions cycle.
  • UCAT or UCAT ANZ. If you are also applying to medical schools in Australia or New Zealand, UCAT tells you to sit the UCAT ANZ instead. You may not sit both in the same year.

Step 2: Create your UCAT account

Registering means creating a UCAT account and registering for that year's test. For 2026, UCAT moved to a new candidate registration system: accounts from earlier years stopped working, and every candidate, new or returning, created a new account and received a new UCAT ID.

Enter your name exactly as it appears on the photo ID you will bring on test day. Under the UCAT photo ID policy, the name on your ID must match the name in your account, and a candidate without acceptable ID is not allowed to test and loses the test fee. A passport is accepted at any test centre; identity cards from non-EU countries are accepted only at centres in the country that issued them, and must still meet the policy's other requirements. If your name needs correcting, UCAT asks for a help request through your account at least five working days before the test.

Step 3: Sort out access arrangements before you book

If you need extra time, rest breaks or other accommodations, apply as soon as registration opens. Access arrangements must be approved before you book, and UCAT cannot add them to an existing booking: the booking has to be cancelled first, under the usual cancellation rules. In 2026 the application deadline was 10 September, six days before the booking deadline. Approvals last for one test year only, so a returning candidate applies again.

Timing matters for the UCAT bursary too. The scheme is open to UK candidates who meet its criteria, and UCAT advises eligible candidates to apply before booking so the bursary can pay for the test.

Step 4: Book your date, time and test centre

Booking opens a few weeks after registration: in 2026 on 23 June, with testing from 13 July to 24 September. You choose an appointment in the web booking system and pay the test fee by card at that point. A completed booking shows on your UCAT account dashboard, and two emails follow: a booking confirmation with your appointment details and a payment receipt.

UCAT's advice is to book as early as possible and to avoid a late test date. The test is the same difficulty throughout the window, so choosing an early or a late date is about your preparation and your margin for error, not about an easier paper. Appointments in the final week of testing are extremely limited, and a late slot can mean travelling some distance to a centre.

If nothing suitable is free, UCAT suggests trying other dates, times and centres, and checking again later, because slots reappear when other candidates cancel or reschedule. The web booking system shows the same availability that Pearson VUE's customer services can see.

Test centres for students in the UAE

The UCAT is a computer-based test delivered at Pearson VUE test centres in the UK and, according to UCAT's eligibility page, in more than 130 countries. You pick the centre when you book. UCAT directs candidates to Pearson's test centre locator, so check which centres in the UAE it lists, and which dates they offer, before booking opens.

Online proctored testing, called OnVUE, is not an everyday alternative. UCAT presents it for candidates who would find it difficult to reach a test centre because of distance, a pandemic, war, civil unrest or natural disaster, and asks them to read its conditions before booking.

On the day, nothing goes into the testing room except the clothes you are wearing, your photo ID and approved items; food and drink, including water, stay outside. The test cannot be paused unless breaks were approved in advance, so any time out of the room comes out of your test time.

Step 5: Rescheduling, cancelling and missed tests

  • Rescheduling: through your UCAT account, up to 24 hours before your appointment, without losing the test fee. The change is confirmed only when the confirmation email arrives.
  • Cancelling: through your UCAT account, up to 24 hours before your appointment, with the test fee returned to you.
  • Missing the test or the 24-hour cut-off: no free reschedule and no fee back, whatever the reason, including illness, transport problems or arriving without valid ID. Booking again means paying again.

Set that next to the squeeze in the final week and the case for an early date is plain: a candidate booked into the last days of the window has very little room to recover from a bad week.

Choosing a date around school

For students applying to UK medical schools, the UCAT falls in the summer before the final year of school. UCAT notes that some candidates book a July date while still in exam mode and others prefer to prepare over the summer. Either works, provided the date leaves a buffer before the end of the window and before the 15 October UCAS deadline. You receive your score on the day you test, so an earlier sitting also gives you longer to decide where to apply.

The same summer has to carry A Level or IB work, and the two are easier to plan together than separately. Our UCAT preparation programme is built around the timed practice the subtests demand, and A Level tutoring is matched to your board and specification. If you would like a week-by-week plan worked back from your test date, send us your date and the universities on your list.

After the test

You receive a copy of your score report before you leave the test centre, and the result appears in your UCAT account within about 24 hours. You do not send it anywhere yourself: UCAT delivers results directly to your chosen UK universities in early November, after matching your application choices with UCAS once the 15 October deadline has passed. Keep the personal details in your UCAT registration identical to your UCAS application, because UCAT warns that a mismatch can stop it finding your choices.

Frequently asked questions

When does UCAT registration open for 2027?
As of October 2026, UCAT has not published the 2027 dates. Its booking page says instructions for registering and booking the UCAT 2027 will be published in March 2027. In 2026, registration opened on 20 May and booking on 23 June.
Is registering for the UCAT the same as booking it?
No. Registering creates your UCAT account; booking reserves a date, time and test centre, and is when you pay the test fee. In 2026 the two opened about a month apart, and both closed on 16 September at 15:00 UK time.
Can I take the UCAT in the UAE?
UCAT delivers the test at Pearson VUE test centres in the UK and in more than 130 countries. Use the Pearson test centre locator linked from the UCAT website to see which centres in the UAE are listed and what appointments they offer before you book.
Can I reschedule my UCAT test?
Yes, through your UCAT account up to 24 hours before your appointment, without losing the test fee. After that cut-off, or if you miss the test, there is no free reschedule.
Do I need a new UCAT account if I registered in an earlier year?
For 2026, yes. UCAT introduced a new registration system, accounts from earlier years stopped working, and every candidate created a new account with a new UCAT ID.
