Where marks are actually lost
The free-response section is four questions of code written on paper, marked against a rubric that awards points for specific lines and structures. Syntax errors that a compiler would catch cost points; so does ignoring the method signature you were given. Handwriting Java under time, repeatedly, is the practice that matters, and it is the practice students skip because it feels artificial.
Conceptually, the recurring gaps are object references versus values, and the exact behaviour of the ArrayList and array operations the course specifies. Both produce answers that look right and fail on an edge case, which the rubric tests deliberately. Tracing code by hand — writing out the state after each line — is the diagnostic that finds them.
The date is not yours to move
AP exams sit in a fixed May window set by the College Board, so preparation has a hard deadline a private schedule cannot shift. If your school does not teach this course, you are buying a full year of teaching rather than top-up lessons, and starting in February is a materially different proposition from starting in September.
