Where marks are actually lost
The rubrics reward identifying a research question, evaluating the credibility and perspective of sources, synthesising across them and acknowledging the limitations of your own argument. A confidently argued piece that never engages a competing view scores below a more tentative one that does. That is the opposite of what most students assume persuasive writing means.
Because most of the grade is submitted across the year, the risk is scheduling rather than difficulty: the team project, the individual paper and the presentations all have deadlines, and a slipped one is not recoverable in the exam. Planning backwards from the College Board dates is the practical work that most protects the score.
The date is not yours to move
AP exams sit in a fixed May window set by the College Board, so preparation has a hard deadline a private schedule cannot shift. If your school does not teach this course, you are buying a full year of teaching rather than top-up lessons, and starting in February is a materially different proposition from starting in September.
